How to reach

The “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” international airport of Chania (CHQ) is strongly recommended as the final destination of your flights, because it is only 44 km (27 miles) away away from the venue and it is well served during the summer. The other choice for your flights is the “Nicos Kazantzakis” airport of Heraklion (HER), however it is not recommended, as it is far more away from the avenue (164km/102miles).

One or two bus transfers from and to Chania airport (CHQ) will be organized for the 11th and 16th of June. Details will be provided closer to the time of the Conference.

Participants may also take a taxi from the airport of Chania that costs about 60-75 Euro (50 min drive) or use public bus transportation between Chania Airport and Kolympari (Kolimpari bus stop) which is operated by the public transport company KTEL: http://www.e-ktel.com/

Participants arriving at the Heraklion airport (HER) may take a bus to Chania and then a bus or taxi from there to Kolympari (more than 3 hours). Taking a taxi from Heraklion to Kolympari is not recommended as it is a 2.5 hour drive and thus very expensive (more than 200 Euro). Participants arriving at the Heraklion airport may also rent a car at Heraklion airport and drive to Kolympari.

The kitchen can meet special dietary needs with advance notice. Please indicate your needs on the registration form.

Leisure Activities and tourism

At the conference center

There are many possibilities for walks. The OAC has a natural stone "reconciliation" pathway with breathtaking sea view. A pebble beach is accessible just across the road from the OAC. Also, the Academy has a library and a Museum of Cretan Herbs. The environmental initiatives of the OAC are presented in a special leaflet. Very close to the OAC is the Holy Monastery of Lady of the Angels (Gonia).

In the surrounding area

Built on the ancient city of Kydonia, the city of Chania has preserved entire Venetian, Ottoman and Jewish quarters. Places worth a visit are the Archeological Museum, the Venetian harbour and its lighthouse (built in the 16th century).

Extra Excursions

During your stay at the OAC, the reception of the Institute can provide you info about possible excursions that you could join with extra cost. The possible destinations of these excursions could be: Samaria Gorge, Grambousa Island/Balos, Elafonisi Beach, Knossos, etc. Also, if you are interested to rent a car, the Academy’s reception staff will be delighted to assist you.
